Sadly it seem a tragic series of naive misjudgments made this result almost inevitable. Local knowledge says they chose to camp in a particularly dangerous area and their bear alarms do not seem to have been effectively set, nor did they mount an armed guard in case of polar bear attack. In effect they virtually invited one of the world’s most dangerous carnivores to dinner.
