Geo-engineering does not deserve serious climate policy consideration
The likelihood that such technology could bring a safe, lasting, democratic and peaceful solution is miniscule (Pat Mooney, The Guardian)
IPCC asks scientists to assess geo-engineering climate solutions
Leaked documents ahead of key Lima meeting suggest UN body is looking to slow emissions with technological fixes rather than talks (John vidal, The Guardian)
Mooney is at least partly correct – there is no possibility geoengineering will ever be agreed because there is no universally advantageous weather solution, even if we could engineer it. And that is the great value of geoengineering! It is not that we actually want anyone to screw with the planet’s climate and we certainly don’t want any cooling (the world will change and warming is much the preferred option). What we want, need actually, is for everyone to continue to disagree and never get around to doing anything while it becomes unavoidably obvious that the planet continues its endless cycle of warming and cooling without human intervention. By all means let’s talk about the weather but for Heaven’s sake, don’t let politicians do anything!
